Suzy and Mario St. Hyacinth Basilica Chicago wedding | Victoria’s Rosemont reception-

Suzy has been waiting for this blog post for four, almost five years if I remember correctly. She was a guest at one of the weddings I’ve photographed early in my career, and she has been following my work even before she met her now husband Mario.  She e-mailed me as soon as she was engaged, it was almost two years before the wedding.

Suzy from the bottom of my heart I thank you. Thank you for all the years you’ve been reading this blog, for your kind comments, for getting to know me even before we met. For being my biggest fan. I hope you enjoy your wedding photos, as much as I enjoyed creating them.

At the Hotel (Holiday Inn express) where the reception took place…I noticed that the lights in the lobby were casting a cool shadow,  I asked them hold hands to complete the heart pattern. If you listen carefully you’ll hear Suzy squealing over this photo, I just know it 😉 Favorite!!!

From the Bride…

The Dress was by Bonny and was bought at the AMAZING Miss Pamela’s Plus Size Bridal Salon. (www.misspamelasplus.com Rochester, IN).  I thought as a plus size bride, I was only going to be able to go to one store and get my dress…a dress that wasn’t going to be unique.  I found a dress that everyone was raving about and I still get compliments on.

Shoes: Black & Baby Blue Pumas (my wedding colors)…I’m serious too…even down the aisle.  HATE heels & everyone got such a smile at me turning my nose up to the idea I HAD to wear heels.

Victoria Rosemont Wedding, Rosemont Holiday Inn Express (10)

Venue: Victoria’s Rosemont….BEST FOOD & SERVICE EVER!!!!  I can’t rave about this place enough…I went to so many tastings (they do one a month) and the night of our wedding the food was better than any of the tastings we went to (I planned 2 years out so I went to a lot lol).  The service was impeccable, I wanted for NOTHING.  Pricing was SO reasonable & it was awesome that it’s on top of a Holiday Inn express, so you had the hotel right there…paid banquet hall prices but didn’t have a banquet hall feel.

Victoria Rosemont Wedding, Rosemont Holiday Inn Express (13)

Flowers : Cattleya Bridal & Floral Design : Juliet Tan was so sweet, her patience & determination to give me the blue flowers for my wedding that I wanted is something that I will always be grateful to her for.  Juliet was able to put together the  most beautiful but simple floral arrangements that didn’t break the bank & everyone was taking pictures of because of how pretty they were.

Makeup: Krissy Vanderwoude (www.krissyv.com) her work speaks for itself. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the air brushing (seriously a MUST HAVE) Put it this way, it was only supposed to be myself and 2 other bridesmaids, but I think she ended up doing 7 people (not including me) as once they saw one person done EVERYONE wanted Krissy to do their makeup (even some of my guest at the hotel that morning)

Victoria Rosemont Wedding, Rosemont Holiday Inn Express (9)

Wedding Coordinator: Jen & Katie at The Smitten Bride (www.thesmittenbride.com) were my life savers.  I’m crying right now writing this, because I will NEVER EVER be able to express the love & appreciation I have for Jen (the owner).  She kept my head together & was my rock throughout the whole process.  I didn’t even know till she had already made other arrangements that my Limo company had bailed on us & I was stuck without any way to get to the church or back.  But Jen took care of everything with my father and I only knew once a trolley company (again thanks Victoria’s for the Trolley) had been hired.

Victoria Rosemont Wedding, Rosemont Holiday Inn Express (31)

Favorite wedding related purchase…Hands down my photographer Hilda @ Angel Eyes Photography.  To be truthful, I was so sad because I didn’t think I could hire her.  I had spent 5 years looking at all these BEAUTIFUL brides, obsessing over the amazing photography & just wanted so badly to be that bride & groom that I envied every time I saw a blog post.  I couldn’t find ANY other photographers & kept saying no to any suggested.  So finally I told my coordinator Jen, I am rearranging my ENTIRE wedding budget to revolve around Angel Eyes Photography.   Hilda was there to be my shield when I needed “space”, she was there to make me laugh when I found out about the Limo, Hilda makes sure the bride & groom get EXACTLY what they want on their day.  Hilda you are amazing and I had the wedding of my dreams in part because you were there :- ) xoxoxoxo

Victoria Rosemont Wedding, Rosemont Holiday Inn Express (28)

Favorite wedding memory… Turning that corner to walk down the aisle…at that moment all worries, all stress went away.  I thought I was going to be my usual emotional/crying self, but I was SO happy I couldn’t.   I’ve never felt such pure joy in my life…I was a princess getting married in a “princess church” walking down to marry my prince.

Advice for Brides-to-be…Whatever happens, happens the day of…at the end of the day it is about marrying the man or woman that you love….the person you will spend the rest of your life with.  Everything else is secondary and doesn’t matter.”

Michigan Shores Club, Wilmette IL Wedding — Brighid & Chris-

When I arrived at Brighid’s home to photograph the getting ready portion of the day, the Beatles were blasting, an adorable toddler was dancing with her little plastic guitar, and  I saw this hanging in the hall. I knew it was going to be a great day…and it was!!

From the Bride…
‘Hair and make up- Fuga Italian Escape Salon and Spa: I’ve been going here for years and knew that I could trust them to make me beauteous. Really, though, I wanted things to be kept simple and as natural as possible, and they succeeded in every way. I could not have been happier with the way I looked. They’re the best.
Church-Our Lady of Perpetual Help : The church was by far the easiest choice to make. I attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help from K-8, and I have always been astounded by its beauty. I also have wonderful memories there that couldn’t be recreated any other place. Not to mention that my grandparents, parents, and sister got married there as well. It was the best choice as well–what a magical walk down the aisle.
Michigan Shores Club wedding, Wilmette wedding planning, Chistmas Holiday wedding photos (28)

Venue-Michigan Shores Club: Choosing our venue was the second easiest part of our planning. Chris and I knew right away (I might have known before he even proposed) that Michigan Shores Club was going to be the perfect place for our wedding reception. My grandparents, parents, and sister all had their receptions there. Michigan Shores Club was the best choice for us not only because it is absolutely stunning but also because the staff made everything about our reception effortless. John and Irene are amazing people. They made sure that everything went as smoothly as possible. The food was definitely something to write home about as well. We still have people raving about how delicious the meal tasted. MSC went above and beyond our expectations.

Dress-Ultimate BrideMonique Lhuillier: My mom and I went to Ultimate Bride for my dress, where my sister had been successful a couple of years prior, and they did not disappoint. Ultimate Bride made us feel comfortable right from the get go–even when making an appointment and validating parking. My consultant was Stephanie, and she was fabulous. She took everything I said into consideration, but she also helped me to look a little bit out of my comfort zone (without being pushy), and thank goodness she did. She showed me a dress that I had already said no to based on online photos, and she asked me to try it. Needless to say, that was the one. It fit everything I wished for: fitted, lace, open back, fun accessories, etc. I also cannot say enough about Maria and Nami from the alterations department. Maria and Nami are miracle workers. Seriously. My dress fit like a glove. It honestly looked like it was made just for me when they were finished. They did such a beautiful job. Ultimate Bride made what could be a very stressful piece of the wedding planning puzzle effortless and, for that, I am forever grateful. Also, the dress. No words. I’ve honestly contemplated wearing it around the house on several occasions. I have never felt so glamorous. There’s not enough I can say about how perfect this dress was for me and how beautiful I felt in it.

Michigan Shores Club wedding, Wilmette wedding planning 1

Shoes-Michael by Michael Kors: I didn’t want to break the bank on shoes, but I knew I needed to find a comfortable pair if I was going to be tearing up the dance floor all night. I headed into the Michael Kors store on a whim with my sister, and we were immediately greeted by an incredibly warm, friendly sales woman who wanted nothing more than to help me find “the shoes.”  They had the perfect pair of peep-toe, platforms that were just flashy enough to compliment my dress without being over-the-top, and they were definitely affordable. They were pretty comfortable, too. I lasted quite a long time on them–including a one and a half hour cocktail hour at which I was walking around and standing the entire time. They also made it through quite a lot of dancing. I won’t lie though…I changed into flats later on. Brides-to-be I suggest always having a back up pair of shoes you know you can go to for comfort. It’s well worth it.
Michigan Shores Club, Wilmette, Illinois Christmas tree, night time wedding Angel Eyes Photography by Hilda Burke Chicago (7)
Tux-Formally Modern Tuxedo: They had a lot of variety at great prices. Their tuxes were fitted, sharp, and classic. I have to say my hubby looked pretty darn good. The staff there was really helpful and laid back. They even let my brother return the tuxes a day later (free of charge) so that we could spend some time with my family the next day instead of racing to return all of the tuxes. They made it really easy for out-of-town groomsmen, too. They told them exactly how to get measured and then they could enter all of their info online. We had a lot of groomsmen who were out-of-towners, so it was great. Going with Formally Modern Tuxedo was well worth it. Chris’s input is, “I agree.” That says it all.
Ultimate Bride-Monique Lhuillier wedding dress, Michael Kors fun unique wedding shoes (6)
Flowers-Morning Glory Flower Shop: Barb and her staff had created beautiful bouquets and flower arrangements for not only my sister’s wedding but also a great friend of mine’s wedding. Morning Glory Flower Shop was incredibly helpful when discussing flower options (especially because I wasn’t really quite sure what I wanted). They were realistic about costs and availability as well. My flowers were very simple, and I did not do centerpieces, but they delivered on everything. I did bouquets and a card table centerpiece, and I loved all of the arrangements. They were exactly what I had hoped they would be and more. They added so much while still being simple and classic. They were delivered to the church as well, which was great–one less thing to worry about. If I needed floral arrangements in the future, I’d go back to Morning Glory Flower Shop in a heart beat.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Glenview (2)
DJ-Style Matters DJ, Inc.: Go with these guys if you want to have a great night with a ton of dancing. They are easy-going, fun, intelligent DJs who know how to keep you and your guests out on the dance floor. They are also incredibly professional. Spencer always responded to any issues/concerns I had promptly, and he made me feel confident in my choice of DJ.  The dance floor was always full, and I had to be dragged off the floor to leave when the night was over. Working with Style Matters was a great experience, and I highly suggest them if music is something that’s really important to you but you want something a little different than typical music you hear at weddings.
Michigan Shores Club wedding, Wilmette wedding planning, Chistmas Holiday wedding photos (6)

Cupcakes-Three Tarts Bakery: We went with cupcakes as our centerpieces instead of flowers, and we were not disappointed. Not only did our cupcakes look beautiful but they also tasted incredible. Honestly, I could have kept eating cupcakes for days. They also made a small cake for Chris and I, which was to die for. Three Tarts was easy to work with, and they took my ideas into consideration and created a great alternative to the typical flower centerpieces. If you’re looking for a delicious cake or cupcakes you’ll hear about long after the wedding, head over to Three Tarts.

My favorite wedding related purchase-Angel Eyes Photography: All brides have heard at least a million times that the day goes by in a blink of an eye and that could not be more accurate. That’s why booking a confident, intelligent, fun, crazy, quirky photographer was one of the most important things to me. Now, Hilda may be reading this and thinking, “she’s being a bit premature in saying I was her favorite wedding related purchase because she hasn’t even seen all of the photos,” but, that’s the great thing about Hilda–I never have had a doubt in my mind when it comes to her or her photography. Hilda is amazing. Chris and I are maybe two of the most awkward people ever (ask our families), and Hilda, somehow, got beyond all of that, and she made us feel incredibly at ease, and we had so much fun with her! Carol, her assistant for our wedding, was also a trip. I think we laughed more with them than we could have ever expected. As I’m writing this, I’m actually missing them. Angel Eyes Photography was by far my best wedding related purchase. I know that the photos will be breathtaking, and I will have such fond memories of a day that really is a blur.
Michigan Shores Club wedding, Wilmette wedding planning, Chistmas Holiday wedding photos (25)
My favorite wedding moment: It’s going to be a cheesy, totally cliche moment, but I can’t help it. When I began walking down the aisle, I kind of lost my bearings a little bit. No, I didn’t fall (thank goodness), but I kind of got caught up in looking at everyone around me, and I almost, for a slight, nanosecond, forgot where the most important person of the day was standing. Then I kicked myself in the arse and reminded myself of what was going on. At that moment, I looked up (instead of from side to side in a totally overwhelmed manner) and saw Chris. He was looking right back at me with a huge smile on his face, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. At that moment, I knew all was right in the world for me and that happier and happier days were lying ahead of us. Another close second–seeing my dad right before walking down the aisle (he hadn’t seen me all done up yet). One of very few moments I had tears in my eyes.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Glenview (1)
Something I wish I would have done differently: Nada. I can’t change the past, can I? And I truly have no regrets. What will be will be, and what was was. I loved everything about our day.
Advice for brides-to-be: Relax. Listen to all of the people who tell you that nothing can be perfect and that things will go wrong, and you won’t be able to change them. I actually listened (much to my mom’s and sister’s surprise), and I was present in every moment of the day and evening, and I can honestly say I enjoyed every single moment. I am not the relaxed type. I’m completely type A. I knew, though, that day I needed to relax and enjoy everything, and I did. I couldn’t be happier. Don’t worry about all the little things–or the big things. All you should worry about is enjoying yourself and being present for all of the love that will fill your special day.

I will say it ’till I’m blue in the face…it doesn’t matter how amazing your wedding is, if your DJ is not, your wedding will not be the fun party you were hoping for. Hire a professional with great reviews like my friends at MDM 🙂 Love this photo of their new LED dance floor…no it’s not Photoshop, but it is my new favorite photo.

From the Bride…
‘Dress: Reem Acra
Shoes: Kate Spade– I. love. these. shoes.
Tux: Vera Wang for Men’s Wearhouse (Brian is still mad at me for making him wear a gray tux, but it was the right choice)
Rings: United Gem– Dara was awesome and helped us find just what we wanted. She even designed my engagement ring (with a bit of help from Brian)!
Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse in Chicago, Wedding planning chicago Gibson's romatic photos angel eyes photography by Hilda Burke
Hair and Makeup: Melissa Murphy at Jonathan Breitung Salon– Part of my glow was because I was marrying my best friend. The other part was because Melissa is such a wonderful stylist and did my makeup just right!
Bridesmaids’ dresses: Ann Taylor
Flowers: Pollen – Lynn was amazing. I know nothing about flowers (at all) and so I basically told her that I wanted something “pretty” in “fall colors” and she somehow (very patiently) came up with exactly what I wanted!
Gibsons Restaurant Chicago Wedding Reception St. Clement Church lue bridal shoes delicious wedding food (37)
DJ: Natalie from Toast and Jam– Natalie was awesome. She was super patient with us when picking out first parent dance songs and she kept the dance floor full all night. I didn’t worry about a thing with Natalie in charge of the pacing and timing of all the events- everything was perfect.
Cake: Bittersweet – Super easy to work with and I think that the cake came out wonderfully- it was red velvet…yum (flowers on cake from Pollen).
Gibson’s: Wow! This could not have been better. I wanted to have our reception somewhere that had an on-site kitchen because the quality of the food that we served was really important to both of us. We got so many compliments on the food and the service was outstanding.
St Clement: Obviously, a beautiful venue. Father Manny made everything so personal by reading our own words about one another (surprise!) at the ceremony.
Gibsons Restaurant Chicago Wedding Reception St. Clement Church lue bridal shoes delicious wedding food (6)
Favorite memory- I have a few:
-Seeing Brian at the end of the aisle waiting for me when the doors swung open. Despite being nervous, I knew that everything was okay when I finally made it to him and grabbed his hand.
-Having everyone we know and love in one room together for US. Getting to share our special day with everyone we love made it that much more special…and so much fun.
-My dad’s speech. Classic. So, so funny and perfect.
-The surprise “bubble” first dance that Hilda arranged. So fun and whimsical.
My favorite wedding related purchase was probably my dress. I knew it was right because it fit perfectly when I first tried it on (I actually had to gain about 5 pounds for it to fit right with NO alterations on the fit – you can’t beat that!). OR those blue shoes. I am still trying to figure out what I have in my closet so I can wear them again. They are too fun to “save”!
Advice to Brides: The more relaxed you are through the process and the day, the more fun it is. Let the professionals take care of the things that you have hired them for – they know what they are doing!’
